Colloquium- 22 April 2020 – Leuven
Leuven Interdisciplinary Platform for the Study of the Sciences (LIPSS)
Medical objects from the past stir our imagination. Having lost their original functions within the medical enterprise, they gain new meanings as scientific heritage and testimonies of the experience of illness and healing. They may surprise us by their esthetic nature, previously less visible, and reveal the particularity of present-day health care to us, acting as a welcome mirror. This colloquium questions the academic potential of these objects and the institutions – medical museums – that collect, preserve, examine and present them to the public. What are their functions and audiences? Can we use them when teaching (medical) students? May we integrate them in our interdisciplinary research? Four internationally renowned experts offer their views on these matters and share best practices.
